Funeral services for Billy Joe “BJ” Meeks, Sr., 78, of Gun Barrel City, were held Feb. 10, 2014, at Eubank Cedar Creek Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jacky Meeks and Rev. Jim Shaffer officiating. Interment followed at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas.
Meeks was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Mabank, to Gleda Mae (Stephens) and Archie Joe Meeks, and died Feb. 7, 2014.
He truly loved his family, as well as his store, “The Barn,” as he loved buying, selling and trading.
He was very personable and would talk to anyone, anywhere. He enjoyed dancing and watching Gunsmoke.
He worked at Verson for 28 years and as a machinist for other companies for another 10 years.
He spent more than 20 years making “The Flea Market Tour.” He was Baptist by faith. He was a loving, caring man who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Mildred, son Terry Meeks and a daughter at birth.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Meeks, of Gun Barrel City; son Billy Joe Meeks, Jr., of Wylie; daughter Donna Vaughn and husband Bill of Seven Points; stepsons Allen West of Utah, Jerrod Hawbaker of Amarillo; stepdaughter Melinda Crow and husband Gary of Whitney; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two on the way; brothers Gene and Don Meeks, both of Bullard; other loving family members and many more friends.
