KEMP–Kemp band students in the seventh and eighth grades broke a school record Jan. 7 during All-Region Band auditions held at Sunnyvale Middle School.
In the past, the most students to have earned a spot on the All-Region Band totaled five. However, this past event qualified 24 students with three more listed as alternates, assistant band director Marc Christy reported.
In addition, “more students chose to participate in this audition than at any other time in my experience,” Christy added.
Five hundred students from region area schools, including Mabank, Kemp, Canton, Eustace, Malakoff, Cross Roads, Scurry-Rosser, Crandall, Edgewood and Kaufman, among others.
Sixty one students from Kemp participated in the competition.
“There was lots of competition,” Christy said.
Fifty-six flute players competed for 17 spots, of which five Kemp students captured a place. There were 59 clarinet players, of which only 27 were selected, with four Kemp students winning a seat.
Seventy-three trumpet players competed for 23 seats, of which four Kemp students made the cut. And 80 percussionists fought for one of 12 spots. Seven Kemp students competed.
“Please congratulate all of our band students for their achievement,” Christy said.
