CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Two Mabank High School graduates achieved the ultimate success in coaching the Cedar Hill Longhorns as they won the 5A Texas Football State Championship Dec. 21.
Cedar Hill coaches Stephen Smith and James Sapp led the Longhorns to victory past Katy 34-24 to claim the championship at AT&T Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
The chances of victory looked grim for the former Panthers, as they were down 21-10 at halftime. The Cedar Hill defense played nearly flawless in the second half, allowing only a field goal, while the offense came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 unanswered points to claim the victory and state title.
Smith and Sapp’s path to the championship crossed with other lake-area grads a week earlier in the state semi-final game Dec. 14 against Lake Travis.
