Gun Barrel City hosts its first sanctioned horseshoe tournament

GUN BARREL CITY–The first-ever Gun Barrel City Shootout Texas Horsehoe Pitchers Association (THPA)-sanctioned tournament was held July 13, at the Gun Barrel City Park.
There were 45 contestants involved in the tournament, some driving from as far as Houston.
Dee King, of Conroe, took first place in the Class A division, and Doris Heiden, of Caldwell, took second.
Class divisions are divided into several categories based on ringer percentage. Class A has a ringer percentage of 75 percent or better, while Class H has a ringer percentage of 10 percent or lower.
Mabank’s Chuck Flanery took first place in Class G, while Eustace’s Joel Davenport placed second.
Gun Barrel City residents Billy White and Jody Schedules won first and second place in Class F respectively. Gun Barrel City’s Beau Smith Jr took the top spot in Class H, while David Morrow took second.
Houston resident Nick Lane won Class B, and Ronnie Howard, of Dallas, took second.
Other winners include:
• Class B – first place – Nick Lance, Ronnie Howard – second place,
• Class C – first place – Garland Bailey, second place Rickey Afinowicz,
• Class D – first place – Jimmy Fleet, second place – Elaine Chatterly and
• Class E – first place Septimo Landaverde, second place – Robert Paige.
Another THPA horseshoe pitching tournament is scheduled for Sept. 28, in Gun Barrel City.
