Services for Wesley Earl Verner, 65, of Kemp, will be held at a later date. He willed his body to Southwestern Medical School and his ashes will be returned at a later date for burial at Providence Cemetery in Bartley-Woods.
Verner was born March 2, 1948, and died June 12, 2013, at home with family and friends by his side.
He was known as “Big Wes” and attended Angelo State from 1968-71 on an athletic scholarship. He earned a physical education degree and minored in English. He coached basketball, baseball, football, track and golf in El Dorado for two years.
He was baptized at 39 and became an active member of First Baptist Church in Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Ruth Bartley Verner, grandparents E.E. and Virgie Bartley, and Leona and Carl Verner, all of Ladonia, and four-legged friends Fannie Mae, June Bug, Bubba, Texanna and Amigo.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Rose Marie Verner, father John Verner and wife Shirley of Cumby; brothers Ray Verner and wife Pat of Broken Arrow, Okla., Randy Verner and wife Nan of Mt. Pleasant, Gary Verner and wife Donna of Rowlett, John Verner and wife Michelle of Sulphur Springs; sisters Melinda Manley and husband Steve of Cumby, Virginia Hurse and husband Gary of Lovington, N.M., Debbie Nichols and husband Gary of Ladonia, Nancy Lake and husband Robert of Greenville; aunt Rebecca Hester of Ladonia; nine nieces; 14 nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VNA Kaufman, 102 West Grove, Kaufman, TX 75142.
