KEMP–The hosting Kemp Lady Yellowjackets were eliminated from the playoff picture Tuesday after losing to the Malakoff Lady Tigers, 46-44, in double overtime.
The fact that the game went that long was a surprise to many, considering the slow first half Kemp had.
“We only had eight points at half. It was not a good half,” Kemp head coach Zach Burleson said.
“Missed tons of layups and we just never got going.”
The second half saw not only an improved offense, but a Lady Yellowjacket defense consistently prevent Malakoff from scoring.
“Our second half was much better. Even though we still didn’t shoot well, our intensity was up. This is more of what we are like,” Burleson explained. “We got aggressive and easily should have won.”
By the end of regulation, Kemp had tied the game, 39-39.
It took Malakoff two overtime periods to win the game by just two points.
“A couple unfortunate things happened and we just didn’t pull it out,” Burleson said. “I really am proud of the effort we put forth.”
The loss puts Kemp at 15-15 for the season.
Kemp hosted Palmer Friday, and will visit Red Oak Life Academy Tuesday to close out the season.
