MABANK–Mabank Panther football player Rance Thorne received the highest UIL academic honor available. He was named to the Elite Academic All-State team.
“The elite team selections are players who have reached the highest point total possible,” Mabank head football coach Jared Wingfield said. “In the entire state there were only 14 other players selected to the Elite Team from class 3A.”
Rance was the only elite player selected from Henderson or Kaufman County.
Mabank also had three players named to the Academic All-State second team – John Velez, Nathan Key and Jordan Vanover.
The Eustace Bulldogs were also represented on the Class 2A Academic All-State team.
Gavin Kirkhart received second team honors, while Kyle Purselley and Jalen Seahorn both received honorable mention recognition.
In order for a player to be nominated to the Academic All-State team, they must be a senior and have a 92 GPA or higher from grades nine through 12, as well as the first six weeks of the current year.
The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank, SAT and/or ACT score.
The student-athletes are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have earned.
