Bulldogs finish second at Fruitvale tournament

FRUITVALE–The Eustace Bulldogs took second place at the Fruitvale basketball tournament Dec. 6-8, after a 48-34 loss to the hosting Fruitvale Bobcats Saturday.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 60-47 victory over Rockwall Heritage. They then defeated the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats, 52-48, in the semi-final round.
The ’Dogs came up short against Fruitvale in the championship game after they failed to overcome their slow, first-quarter start.
Against Rockwall Heritage, the Bulldogs took a 16-10 lead after the first period, and had garnered a 30-18 lead by halftime.
They added 20 points to their score in the third period, and held Rockwall to 14 points.
Rockwall outscored Eustace, 15-10, in the fourth period, but it wasn’t enough to press for a lead.
Eustace’s John Bradburn led the ’Dogs’ offense by scoring 24 points.
Steven Stine scored 11 points, Kyle Wood scored 10 points and Chris Farnsworth added six.
Against Scurry-Rosser, the game was a tight affair, with both teams pressing for the lead.
Eustace led, 12-9 after the first period, but the game was tied, 21-21 at halftime.
Eustace took a two-point advantage in the third period, outscoring Scurry, 13-11.
Eustace added two points to their lead in the fourth period, scoring 18 points to the Wildcats’ 16.
Bradburn again led the Eustace offense, this time with 26 points. Wood followed with 11 points. Stine scored 10 points in the contest.
In the championship game against Fruitvale, the Bulldogs’ slow start could not be compensated for. They were outscored 16-4 in the first period, and 8-7 in the second.
Fruitvale scored 11 points in the third period, while Eustace scored 10. Both teams scored 13 in the final stanza of the game.
The Bulldogs returned to action Tuesday as they hosted the Mineola Yellow Jackets. They will travel to Blooming Grove Dec. 14.
