LIVELY–Two people are dead following a shooting incident around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
According to the Kaufman Sheriff’s Office, Brittany Markham, 21 (a waitress at the Western Cafe in Kemp since 2006), was found dead along with 41-year-old James Alan Nix in a residence in the Lively area. Both suffered gunshot wounds.
Investigators learned from a third party that Nix, the resident, was making threats to injure himself when Markham tried to prevent him by prying a gun out of his hands. That’s when the gun went off, killing Markham.
As the person at the scene turned to get help he heard a second shot go off.
Nix had turned the gun on himself. When deputies arrived they found two gunshot victims just inside the front door of the residence in the 18400 block of FM 2613.
Markham graduated from Kemp High School in 2010.
Investigators have not released the reason behind the man’s suicide. More on the case may be released later.
