Cooking up a good time at the arboretum

ATHENS–The East Texas Arboretum celebrated its Fall Festival and Black-eyed Pea Cook Off once again Oct. 13. The mild weather cooperated for the visitors to the grounds to enjoy games, rides, music, art, tall tales and wagging tails.
East Texas Arboretum staff announced this will be the last year the Cook Off will feature Black-eyed Peas. Next year’s theme will feature tail gate recipes.
This year’s winners of the Black-eyed Pea Cook Off were first place Mexican Cake (quesadilla) by Wilma Sheltman, second place Caramel Turtle Cheesecake by Taylor Jordan, third place Black-eye Peaco (soft taco) by Rita Clark, fourth place Pumpkin Pie by Wilma Sheltman and fifth place Black-eye Pea Spread on Focacci Bread by Brittney Weaver.
The Trinity Valley Community College (TVCC) Outdoor Theater troupe gave an entertaining performance for the young and young at heart in the main pavilion. The tall tales of Pecos Bill were brought to life for the audience’s amusement. The performance was highlighted with costumes, puppets and sound effects.
Members of the troupe are Krysti Fowler, Haley Fontenot, Jacob Miller, Steven Rosenbalm, Michael Yates, Devon Martin, Tiffany Sexton, Caleb Cates, Samantha Pettigrew, Breezy Robert, Sarah Hensley and Ashley King.
The Henderson County Art Club sponsored an art show with some works for sale to support the “Painting for a Purpose” fund raiser to help the Arboretum build a new storage building. The talented artists displayed original works ranging from graphite pencil to oils. Some artists demonstrated their techniques as well.
The Dog Show had tricks as well as treats. It started off with the Chow down competition between first, second and third place winners Sophie (Amy Weatherholtz), Bailey and McGregor.
Demonstrating some dogs will eat just about anything, the Best Smoocher were first place Chloe (Linda & Ron Grigsby) and second place Rowdy.
Best Trick Performer were first place Obie (Jerry Crockett) and second place Sophie.
The Sharpest Dresser were first place Fifi (Misty Crowser) in her pink butterfly tutu, second place Eloise as a cute ladybug and third place Chloe as an enchanting witch.
The Prettiest were first place Fifi (Misty Crowser), second place Eloise and third place Shadow. The Most Handsome were first place Solomon (Marlene House) dressed as Superman, second place Obie and third place Max. Dakota (Chad Harris) won Judges Choice.
